Route Details – Leg 1 – Kirkcaldy to John O’Groats

th July, Kirkcaldy-St Cyrus (95miles) – We will set off from Kirkcaldy Promenade on the 8th of July at 9am in the morning. If you are free, be sure to pop along and give us your words of encouragement. Heading north hugging the coast, we will pass many places including; Leven, Anstruther, Crail, Kingsbarns and St Andrews where we aim to stop off to allow people the opportunity to take a ride in the tuk-tuks in return for a small donation to the Charity. If you are in the area, please come along, you will love it. Heading out of St Andrew we will head towards Tayport, Dundee, Monifieth, Carnoustie, Arbroath and Montrose. Again we may stop off in some of these places if we have the time on our side as well as an appropriate place to stop. We will then make our final journey of the day to St Cyrus, where we have kindly been offered accommodation at Milton Haven Seaside Caravan Park to settle for the night.

th July,  St Cyrus – New Aberdour ( 97miles) – Heading north from St Cyrus towards Aberdeen, keeping to the coast and off main roads as much as we can, we will pass through Inverbervie, Stonehaven, Newtonhill & Portlethen. We plan again to stop off in Aberdeen and possibly meet up with a gentleman who we bought ‘Tilly’ from. Here we will offer trips in the tuktuk in return for a small donation. Coming out of Aberdeen we will continue north passing Newburgh, Cruden Bay before stopping off in Peterhead. Dechlan is keen to stop off to see a teacher and I have a young person who is supported by the Ellen Macarthur Cancer Trust who would like to pop by and say hi. From here we head further north towards Fraserburgh, then along to New Aberdour where we have been kindly offered accommodation at AC/DC Glamping and camping site.

th July, New Aberdour – Fortrose – (102 miles) – The long drive towards Inverness will be our longest day so far. Heading passed Gardenstown, Banff, Cullen, Buckie, Lossiemouth, Findhorn and Nairn before arriving in Inverness. We do plan making some stop offs on this route including Ice Cream shops recommended by Dechlan’s school teacher aswell as Sculptor Cave(providing tide times are good) and of course the beaches. We have no set place to stop to offer rides but if the mood and locations are right we will stop. Heading north out of Inverness we will cross the Kessock Bridge into Charleston. From here we will head east along the coast to Fortrose. We have kindly been offered accommodation at Fortrose Bay Campsite. We are hoping in the evening to head to Chanonry Point in the hope of seeing some dolphins.

th July, Fortrose – Thrumster – (88miles) – Heading out of Fortrose we aim to catch a small ferry (only holds 2 small cars) at Cromarty. This will be our busiest day so far. We have lots planned, including visits to the Mermaid of the North, Fearn Antiques, coffee and cake in Tain and a visiting to catch up with an old work colleague. We then head north towards Dornoch, Golspie, Helmsdale, lybster and Whalogoe where we will to take on the mighty Whaligoe steps (wish us luck). Our accommodation for the night is just north of Whaligoe at Thrumster. The lovely couple at Mill Farm Croft have offered us a Bell tent for the night so it will be a welcome break from pitching the tent. A first ever sleep in a bell tent for all of us.

th July, Thrumster – John O Groats– (21 miles) – After what we hope is a lovely evening in the bell tent; we will head north towards Wick before making our way to John O Groats. The many tourists will get the opportunity to take a ride in the tuktuk’s or even just have a look around. Of course we will have to participate in taking pictures with the tourist. We hope to take some time out to reflect on the journey just travelled. First leg will be gone, a full 413 miles will be complete. We will gather ourselves and head onto the second leg, full steam ahead 🙂
