After an extremely early night we woke up fresh, well I say fresh, maybe a little more alert would be a better phrase. Up and showered, it was hard to leave the comfort of the hotel room but the excitement of it being the final day and getting to see family, friends and more importantly our wee furry baby had us all motivated.
Guess what….it was raining outside. We were that used to it now it didn’t even phase us, positive we didn’t have to shammy down a tent though. Off for a mcds breakfast to fuel us up, we set off. Unfortunately there wasn’t much routes to take on the east coast so we had to go on the A1 at points. It’s safe to say I was rather tense. I hadn’t even realised we were in England until Bobby said first stop is the ‘welcome to Scotland’ sign. We headed off again and come off through Eyemouth then onto St Abs. I hadn’t ever been here, lovely wee streets down to a quiant wee harbour. Super windy and the waves were thrashing against the rocky coastline creating a beautiful view. We were getting cold so continued north towards Cove. we reached peasehill and the road was closed Diversions were taking us back the way about 7miles journey. Bobby had a quick look and noticed we can get passed it by going through peasehill holiday park. Off we went down the narrow steep embankment and back up the otherside. We headed down to Cove. I had been given a tip off from someone I volunteered alongside at the Ellen Macarthur Cancer Trust, that there was a secret(not so secret) tunnel that took you to Cove Harbour. We walked down and through the tunnel and right enough there was a nice little harbour and beach on the other side. Few houses in the area too adding to its charm. There was a car on one side though so there was a way down to the harbour house by car but I guess when the tide was in the only access to the beach area would be through the tunnel. After a quick explore we set off again. We joined back on the A1 and I have to say it was one of the most intense drives I have had. The traffic was moving so fast and flying passed us. The wind was belting us from the east and moving the tuktuks quite a bit. Was pleased to come back off at Dunbar so I could relax a bit again. From here we pulled the throttle back full for most of our trip along the east coastline of lothians and Edinburgh. Passing by Gullane, Prestonpans, Musselburgh and Leith. We got a few waves along and the way and the odd beep, which pushed us on. Stopped to get lunch in Leith but it was so busy we couldn’t get parked so onwards towards Crammond. We picked up some sandwiches in Lidl and sat down the harbour.
We could see fife and knowing it was getting closer I just wanted to be back home. I had mixed feelings sitting at the harbour. Part of me wasn’t ready to stop this adventure. I feel like once we hit the streets of Edinburgh it was all too familiar, the places and the horrific roads. Actually, the coastal roads in Lothian were one of the worst we have driven on the whole trip. I had loved getting to see places I have never seen, meeting new people, complete strangers and thriving in the outdoors. Soon it would be back to everyday life. My mind and thoughts soon focused back to seeing my family and my wee furry baby. We had planned to cross the forth road bridge but giving how confident we were, decided just to do the Queensferry crossing. It would get more attention and awareness, so why not. We set off over the bridge to a few beeps and waves. Hitting the other side it was the home stretch. As we come over the hills at Kinghorn towards kirkcaldy a huge smile started to appear across my face, we did it, kirkclady was just around the corner as where some of our friends and family. Driving toward the promenade car park I could see some of my friends on the wee embankment and I was ever so thankful they had come, lots of beeps before driving in and seeing the rest of my family. My wee furry baby absolutely engulfed us with kisses and cuddled and yelped her wee head off. She is just the cutess ever. At this point I felt really overwhelmed. I was tired, elated we finished and just thankful for everyone that showed to welcome us back home.
What a journey, what an experience, what an adventure. I can’t wait to take a few days to let it sink in and have time to think back on the special moments we had with each other and complete strangers.
