17th July, Mallaig – Glencoe – (70 miles) – Off the ferry and straight into the 3rd leg of the trip. We will leave Mallaig and head on the main road towads Glenfinnan, passing by Arisaig and Druimindarroch. We plan to stop off at Glenfinnan viaduct before heading to Fort William. We would like to stop here and give people the opportunity to take a ride in the tuk-tuks for small donation towards the charity. We will press south towards Onich before crossing over the bridge towards Ballachulish. From here we will take the drive into Glencoe before stopping at the red Squirrel campsite, where we have kindly been offered free accommodation for a night or 2 if needed.
18th July, Glencoe – Tarbert – (90 miles) – Leaving Glencoe we will head back to Ballachulish and then south passed Achindarroch, Dalnatrat and down across the bridge to Dallachulish. We will continue south towards Oban passing Connel and Dunbeg before arriving in Oban. We will stop in Oban for people to have a ride in the tuktuk, while we watch the ferry boats come and go. Our next stop in the evening is Tarbert so we will continue south passing Kilmore, Kilmartin, lochgilhead and ardrisaig before reaching Tarbert. We decided to book a glamping pod at The Gather for the night and take a welcome break from pitching the tent.
19th July, Tarbert – Maidens – (100 miles) – Today we will pass through all the Marinas that are visited by the Ellen Macarthur Cancer Trust. I am aware there is a young person trip this week so hoping to meet up with the fleet of boats at some stage today. First off we will leave Tarbet at the ferry port heading to Portavardie. When arrive in Portavardie we will make our way east towards Tighnabruaich before heading along the coastal road alongside the Kyles of Bute north towards Ormidale before heading south towards Colintraive. Here we will hop on another ferry over to the Isle of Bute. We head south on Bute towards Port Bannatyne and then onto Rothesay where we catch the ferry back to Wemyss Bay on the mainland. We head south towards Largs where the Ellen Macarthur Cancer Trust has there Scottish base. We aim to stop here for a visit. We then take the long drive south passed Ardrossan, Saltcoats, Irvine, Preswick and Ayr. Our stop off for the night is Biker Haven campsite in Maidens so we make our way there passing Culzean Castle before reaching Maidens and getting settled for the night.
20th July, Maidens – Sorbie – (82 miles) – We set off heading south passed Girvan, Ballantrae and Cairnryan before reaching Stranraer. From Stranraer we head further south out towards Sandhead before heading north towards Dunragit and Glenluce. From here we start heading south again passed Achenmaig, Port William, Monreith then along to Whithorn before heading back north passed Sorbie to kirkinner. We have been offered a free camping pitch for the night at Drumroamin Campsite which is just East of Kirkinner.
21st July, Sorbie – Annan – (96 miles) – We head north towards Newton Stewart before cutting East just before reaching it and head towards Blackcraig. We follow the coastal path passing by Creetown, Gatehouse of Fleet and then out towards Twynholm and Valleyfield. From here we head south following the coastal path again passing Kirkcudbright, Dundrennan, Auchencairn, Palnackie and Dalbeattie We will head south again passed Kippford, Sandyhills before heading towards Dumfries. We will continue on until we reach Glencaple and make our way East towards Annan. We have been offered discounted accommodation at Broomfisheries so will be stopping here for the night.
22nd July, Annan – Gretna – (12 miles) – Today we continue east passing Annan, East Riggs then onto Gretna. Gretna is our furthest point south and our final route on leg 3. We will of course take some time out in Gretna to reflect on the 3rd leg and gear ourselves up before crossing over onto the 4th and final leg of this adventure.
